Nylon Elevator Buckets: Extra Wear and Impact Performance
Nylon buckets provide a useful middle ground between conventional polyethylene and steel. Their mechanical strength and wear performance suit harder-to-handle products where low bucket weight and corrosion resistance are still valuable.
They are often considered for abrasive grains, pellets, sand-like products and demanding continuous operation. Moisture absorption, actual temperature limits and dimensional stability vary by nylon formulation, so the material specification should be confirmed with the bucket manufacturer.

Steel Elevator Buckets: Built for Heavy-Duty Service
Steel buckets deliver high structural strength and withstand heavy impact, large particle sizes and demanding temperatures. Carbon steel, stainless steel and other grades can be selected to match wear, corrosion, hygiene and temperature requirements.
The trade-off is greater moving mass. Steel buckets increase belt or chain load, power demand and operating noise. Carbon steel may also require protective treatment where moisture or corrosive products are present. Elevator structure, fasteners and drive capacity must be checked before replacing plastic buckets with steel.

Common Selection Mistakes
- Choosing by material name alone: formulation, thickness, profile and manufacturing quality also influence performance.
- Ignoring discharge behavior: a durable bucket can still reduce capacity if its profile does not release the product correctly.
- Changing materials without checking the elevator: added bucket weight or different projection can affect the belt, pulley, clearance and motor load.
- Using nominal temperature as the only limit: continuous exposure, peak temperature and product chemistry must be evaluated together.

Nylon commonly offers higher wear resistance, but actual results depend on the formulation, conveyed product, moisture, temperature, bucket geometry and operating speed.
Which bucket material is best for grain elevators?
