Custom UHMWPE Conveyor Rollers for Russia: Reinforced Design for -50°C Operation
Ø127 mm and Ø159 mm UHMWPE rollers reinforced with an internal steel liner for demanding low-temperature conveyor applications.
Custom UHMWPE Rollers Completed for a Russian Project
YIQI Conveyor recently completed a batch of customized UHMWPE conveyor rollers for a Russian customer. The main roller diameters were Ø127 mm and Ø159 mm, with one unusual requirement: the rollers had to work reliably in ambient temperatures down to -50°C.
That temperature requirement changed the way the rollers had to be designed. A standard UHMWPE roller performs well in many normal industrial applications, but at -50°C the complete roller structure also needs to remain stable during cold exposure, start-up, operation and repeated thermal contraction.

Why UHMWPE Was Selected
UHMWPE is widely used in non-metallic conveyor rollers because it combines low weight, corrosion resistance and a smooth working surface.
Compared with a conventional steel roller shell, UHMWPE does not rust and is easier to handle during installation and replacement. These characteristics make it useful for wet, dusty or corrosive conveyor environments.
The Real Challenge Was -50°C
At extremely low temperatures, several factors become much more important:
- Material contraction
- Reduced flexibility of polymer components
- Bearing starting resistance
- Low-temperature grease performance
- Sealing reliability
- Tube rigidity and dimensional stability
Why Add a Steel Liner Inside the UHMWPE Tube?
| Design Benefit | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Improved Rigidity | Helps the roller body maintain its shape under load. |
| Better Dimensional Stability | Provides additional support during extreme temperature changes. |
| UHMWPE Surface Retained | Keeps corrosion resistance, low friction and reduced material adhesion. |

Ø127 mm and Ø159 mm Roller Sizes

The two main roller diameters supplied in this order were Ø127 mm and Ø159 mm. Diameter alone, however, does not determine the correct roller structure.
For customized roller projects, we normally review:
- Roller face length
- Shaft diameter and shaft-end machining
- Bearing model
- Sealing structure
- Working load
- Belt width and roller spacing
- Ambient temperature
Low-Temperature Performance Depends on the Complete Roller
A roller designed for -50°C cannot be evaluated only by its outer tube. Bearings, grease, sealing, shaft design and end structure all need to work under the same low-temperature conditions.
At very low temperatures, unsuitable grease can become stiff and increase starting resistance. Outdoor conveyors may also face snow, moisture, dust and repeated temperature cycling.
Inspection Before Delivery

Before packing, the rollers were checked for dimensional consistency, assembly condition and rotation performance.
| Inspection Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Roller Diameter | Check design compatibility |
| Roller Length | Confirm installation dimensions |
| Shaft Dimensions | Match existing conveyor structure |
| Rotation | Check smooth roller operation |
A Customized Solution Rather Than a Standard Roller
This project is a good example of why conveyor rollers should not always be selected only from a standard catalogue.
The real requirement was not simply an UHMWPE roller. It was an UHMWPE roller capable of operating in an extreme cold environment down to -50°C.
By adding the internal steel liner, the design keeps the external benefits of UHMWPE while providing additional structural support for the customer's actual working conditions.
