What Information Is Needed Before Ordering Conveyor Hood Covers?

A practical guide to cover dimensions, corrugation, opening design, inspection access and installation details before requesting a quotation.

Belt Width Is Only the Starting Point

One of the most common conveyor cover inquiries we receive starts with a simple sentence:

"We need covers for a 1400 mm belt."

Belt width is useful, but it does not tell us the complete cover size. A 1400 mm belt can be installed on different frames, with different trough angles, support widths and mounting heights. Two conveyors with the same belt width may therefore use different hood cover geometries.

We have seen this in replacement projects where the customer expected a standard cover based only on belt width. Once the existing conveyor cross-section was checked, the support width and cover radius were different from the standard drawing. If that difference is discovered after production, site modification becomes much more difficult.

Before quotation, it is better to confirm:

  • Conveyor belt width
  • Supporting frame width
  • Height from mounting point to the top of the cover
  • Idler trough angle
  • Required side clearance
  • Available fixing position

Confirm the Cover Geometry Before Production

For curved conveyor hood covers, dimensions such as H, H1, R and E are normally more useful than belt width alone.

When the project is replacing existing covers, the fastest way is usually to send the original drawing. If no drawing is available, a cross-section sketch plus a few accurate measurements can normally give us enough information to start.

Useful in retrofit projects: clear site photos with a tape measure or marked reference dimensions are often more valuable than a long written description.

Corrugation Is Part of the Structure

Customers sometimes treat the corrugated profile as an appearance choice. In practice, the profile also affects panel stiffness.

64 × 13 mm
76 × 18 mm

Larger and deeper corrugations can provide higher section stiffness, but that does not mean every conveyor should use the deepest profile.

For example, a 76 × 18 mm profile may make sense for a large cover where additional rigidity is required, while a smaller profile may be perfectly adequate for a normal conveyor line. Sheet thickness, cover span, panel length and fixing arrangement all need to be considered together.

Fixed Covers and Opening Covers Can Be Used Together

Another common question is whether the entire conveyor should use fixed covers, one-side opening covers or double-opening covers.

In most long conveyor projects, making every panel openable is unnecessary. Maintenance teams normally need access only at selected areas.

Fixed Cover

Suitable for normal conveyor sections where frequent access is not required. It keeps the structure simple and usually reduces overall project cost.

One-Side Opening

Useful where operators normally inspect the conveyor from one side. The cover can be opened without completely removing the panel.

Double Opening

Better suited to maintenance points, transfer areas or locations where access from both sides is genuinely useful.

A practical layout: use fixed covers for most of the conveyor and place opening covers only where inspection or maintenance is required.

Inspection Windows Should Follow the Maintenance Plan

Inspection windows are helpful, but adding one to every cover usually creates extra cost without much benefit.

Their location should follow the customer's inspection routine. Typical positions include loading areas, transfer points, belt tracking observation points and locations where material buildup needs to be checked.

When specifying inspection windows, confirm:

  • Required quantity
  • Window dimensions
  • Opening or transparent design
  • Position along the conveyor
  • Required access side

Installation Details Matter as Much as the Sheet

A thicker sheet does not automatically mean the complete hood cover system will perform better. The support structure and fixing method are just as important.

Depending on the project, covers may be fixed with clamps, bolts, hinges, brackets or self-drilling fasteners.

For outdoor conveyors, we normally pay particular attention to:

  • Support spacing
  • Fixing point arrangement
  • Wind exposure
  • Snow conditions
  • Whether panels must be removable
  • How maintenance crews will open and close the covers
For strong-wind projects: the wind resistance of a hood cover system cannot be judged from sheet thickness alone. Cover geometry, support structure, fixing points, installation spacing and wind direction all influence the final performance.

Panel length should also be discussed at this stage. Longer sections reduce the number of joints, but very long covers are harder to pack, lift and align during installation.

For export orders, this becomes a practical issue. A panel design that looks efficient on a drawing may waste container space or create unnecessary handling problems at site. Sometimes a slightly shorter modular section is the better overall solution.

A complete engineering package is always welcome, but it is not essential at the first inquiry stage. The following information is normally enough for us to start reviewing a project.

Good Cover Design Starts With Good Project Information

Conveyor hood covers are simple products only at first glance. Once a project involves hundreds or thousands of panels, a small dimensional difference, an inconvenient opening arrangement or an unsuitable fixing detail can create a lot of extra work.

Instead of only asking:
"Which cover fits a 1400 mm belt?"
It is more useful to confirm:
"Which cover geometry, access layout and fixing arrangement fit this conveyor?"
